FEAR: Lessons of Life

I feared being alone
Until I learned to like Myself.
I feared failure
Until I realized that I only Fail when I don't try.
I feared success
Until I realized that I had to try in order to be happy with myself

I feared people's opinions
Until I learned that people would have opinions about me anyway.
I feared rejection
Until I learned to have faith in myself.
I feared pain
Until I learned that it's necessary for growth

I feared the truth
Until I saw the ugliness in lies.
I feared life
Until I experienced its beauty ...
I feared death
Until I realized that it's not an end, but a beginning.

I feared my destiny,
Until I realized that I had the power to change my life.
I feared hate
Until I saw that it was nothing more than ignorance.
I feared love
Until it touched my heart, making the darkness fade into endless sunny days

I feared ridicule
Until I learned how to laugh at myself.
I feared growing old
Until I realized that I gained wisdom every day..
I feared the future
Until I realized that Life just kept getting better.
I feared the past
Until I realized that It could no
longer hurt me.

I feared the dark
Until I saw the beauty of the starlight.
I feared the light
Until I learned that the Truth would give me Strength.
I feared change,
Until I saw that even the most beautiful butterfly had to undergo a Metamorphosis before it could fly.

The show that was (My Food Show in Mumbai)

Both my parents work and hence the household chores are dispensed out to maids and cooks. Over the many years we have had a range of cooks. I disliked most of them, simply because I was a difficult, obstinate child (*pl. note the past tense, WAS... I have new respect for all my former cooks and salute them for their boundless patience.) who wanted to sample all the unhealthy food ever created by mankind! The cooks on the other hand were forced to listen to my parents (their employers) and cook healthy food!! In my early “tweens” (early 20s), I reformed and directed my food cravings elsewhere.... just ate out! But even before I had achieved my freedom and learnt not to blame the cooks, I grew fond of this particular cook. She was a very docile lady, always soft spoken and impeccably dressed. She was short (barely reached my shoulders), had really long hair that she wore in an elegant plait and was eternally in a hurry! She used to sprint from place to place that made her gait pretty comical! So this pleasant lady was my favorite cook not only cause she was a delight to cook with... but cause she was always eager to cook something fancy!

That's how it was in Mumbai for me... this cook used to do all the cutting and pruning and I would then arrive... and just throw some things in the pan and ask her to fry/cook it...once that was done to my desired level of perfection, I would then return to toss some masalas and then leave with my final directions!! My dear cook would smile and follow. She was very excited to learn new things from me and would be an ideal eager student!! She once even thanked me for teaching her how to make the basic pasta dish and operate the microwave! She was slightly intimated by anything more fancy than the stove and was very cautious when she handled the oven or the microwave. Alternately, she would play the part of teacher when I wanted to learn the basic, not so fancy everyday dishes. Very patiently she would show me how to make chapattis and even give me little tips that went a long way! For some reason she was in awe of me and that always amused me!

We also had another cook-+-maid who was very bubbly and a chatterbox. She talked incessantly and kind of butted in my life a lot... so she wasn’t my fav. but I still owe her a lot. She never backed out of my cooking missions and always shared my enthusiasm with equal zeal. When the other (my fav one) cook wasn’t around, she used to do the cutting and basic preparation for me. I also owe her for teaching me how to make “out of this world” phulkas! They would make even the most accomplished Gujrati cooks envious! :P

I do miss being the star of my own show... ofcourse, cooking was never a challenge thanks to these incredible women. And then ofcourse came my audience.... my mum and grandma... who instantly approved anything I made. Mum was always a GREAT sport.. she is not fussy about food and as long as she doesn’t have to cook...loves everything I made!

The chatterbox==>

Sigh!! If only there was a time machine that could take me back in time... on second thoughts.. if I would probably have to live through engineering school once again... so no thank you... I am happy being here, just reminiscing at times about my happy happy showitmes! :)

FOOD NETWORK!!

I have discovered Food Network and have fallen irrevocably in love with it (S. Meyer, Twilight)!

I LOVE food and do enjoy cooking! But doing it everyday?? That’s another issue! However, this discovery has brought me immense happiness... and an epiphany!

What I find extremely fascinating is the way these chefs handle and prepare exquisite cuisines. Certain shows are about 30 min meals for the everyday cooks, while some others showcase special dinners and fancy deserts!

This show I watched was being hosted by a size zero model making date night appetizers and cocktails. For the appetizers she fried oysters with apparent ease but I still refuse to believe that she actually tasted that particular dish! (In my opinion, size 0 = 0 fried meals)

But to be fair most of the other chefs are real characters who are ‘happily’ weighted and seem to have no qualms about it!

These chefs are stars who are extremely creative with food and handle it with utter nonchalance. This complacency is usually portrayed by their peers playing the part of seasoned military men in combat or doctors in their ORs and yet these cooks never seem out of place. They stand in limelight boldly wielding their knives as they cut a succulent vegetable with unbelievable pace! I gawk at them knowing I would have ended up chopping my fingers off.

Next they pull out their shiny vessels (I cannot possibly refer to them as pots and pans) and create extravagant sauces and purees! OOooo and the best part, they NEVER have to clean! Now isn’t that something.

To boost their ratings, their kitchens are enormous and are gaily colored and brightly lit! Most of them have a central table like thing with a hanger on top that houses more of those shiny vessels!

Tell me... if you too had that palatial kitchen, lustrous pots and pans, had someone to shop and stuff your pantry, to clean up after you and do the boring stirring and frying stuff during commercial breaks.... wouldn’t you too gladly cook day after day after day??

Dream on my friends.. you have just found out what constitutes my utmost fantasy! Sigh!!
