It is nice of you to write this post. It is nice of President Obama to participate in the diwali celebrations in the White House.
But in India, in Tamilnadu, the Chief Minister Mr. Karunanidhi does not believe in any Hindu celebrations. He does not send any greetings to the people. He says he is an athiest. But he sends greetings for all non-hindu religious celebratiaons. May be minority vote bank?

To add to what SG said, I have observed that special programs on special occasions like Hindu festivals on Karunanidhi owned private channel "Kalaignar TV" were aired with the reason of holidays or "vidumurai" as they call it in Tamil
But recently I saw that they did mention it on the occasion of Diwali!!! I was shocked, what happened to Mr K's ideologies?
President Obama celebrating Diwali -- it may be a small gesture, but it is great to see. Maybe, we will have a pluralistic world, after all, where not only people will tolerate other faiths, but also will respect them!
